SEND (special educational needs and disability)

WELCOME TO GOMERSAL PRIMARY SCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITY (SEND) INFORMATION PAGE.

''Leaders are ambitious for
pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Leaders have recently
made improvements to the systems to identify and support pupils with SEND. Pupils with
SEND access the same curriculum as their peers. Staff give support to these pupils to help
them in lessons.'' Ofsted Nov 2023

Mrs Kayleigh Ibbitson is our schools Special Educational needs and disability coordinator - SENDCo.

Mrs Rachael Graham is our schools Special Educational Needs and Disability Governor.

At Gomersal primary School we believe early identification and intervention is the key to ensuring that our children gain the best possible start to their school journey and beyond.

Children are identified as having special educational needs or a disability (SEND) through a variety of means.  This could include:

  1. information from a previous school
  2. A child performing below age expected levels
  3. Concerns raised by teacher for example behaviour or self-esteem is affecting performance
  4. Concerns raised by a parent
  5. Liaising with outside agencies, such as Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists,

Parents, and where appropriate the child, are involved in all discussions, at every step.  Once identified, appropriate targets are then put in place, such as an SEN Support plan (SENSP), Sensory passport or a One Page Profile (OPP).

Within Gomersal Primary School we have a number of children across all four areas of SEND which include Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Social and Emotional Mental Health and Sensory and Physical.

SEND Report

Kirklees Local Offer

Please remember that you can always come into school and talk to your child’s class teacher about any concerns or worries that you may have.

The class teacher would then discuss this with Mrs Ibbitson and an Initial Concerns form would be filled out over a period of time. This would enable us to have a clearer picture of what is going on over a prolonged period (around 6 weeks/half a term).

Once this time has come to an end, Mrs Ibbitson would review the form and plan to observe the child.  A discussion would take place with class teacher regarding findings and parents would be informed of action moving forward. This could include adding a child to the cause for concern register, adding them on the SEND register or simply continuing to use Quality First Teaching and interventions to ensure they continue to make progress.
