Welcome to Year 5
A big hello and warm welcome to all children in 5RW and 5BW. We hope that you, and your family, enjoy looking at what we have been learning in Year 5.
In Year 5, the teachers are Miss R Whiteley, Mr A Barber and Mrs Woodhead. The teaching assistants are Mrs Gentry, Ms Kitchen, Mr Whitehouse and Mrs Bellanfante.
Children can bring a small pencil case to school with stationery for them to use in lessons, or for them to store school's stationery in. It would be useful to have some colouring pencils of their own. School will still provide children with stationery they need for lessons.
Children will be given weekly maths and English homework. Homework will be given out on a Friday and collected in on a Thursday.
Please read and complete the home time arrangements letter and return it to your class teacher on the first day back in September. If you don't have access to a printer, a signed, written letter providing the same information is fine.
Should your child have to miss PE/break times due to illness or injury, please complete the form.
If your child is unable to remove their earrings for PE, pleases complete the form.
Please can make sure your child has their indoor PE kit for Mondays and outdoor PE kit for Fridays.
To practice times tables, doubles, number bonds and square numbers use https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.
Spring Term 2020
As part of Science Week, we went down to the woodlands. Children had the opportunity to explore and light their own fire!
They also carried out an enquiry to see if the size of the parachute affected the speed at which it fell.
We revisited our WW2 topic with a focus on the German evacuation of Jews. We took part in a workshop where children learnt about the Kindertransport. They heard stories about children who had been evacuated and looked at some artefacts. In the afternoon, they watched an interview with a Jewish German man who had survived Hitler's reign.
As part of our WW2 topic, we visited Armley Mills to further our understanding of children during WW2. We experienced what a WW2 classroom would be like and what children did to help the home front as an evacuee.
For languages day, we focused on Italy and Italian fashion. We looked at some Italian designer bags before designing our own on paper. We then transferred our design onto paper bags, with a view to develop our designs further for homework.
